چکیده

Streptococcus suis is a major swine pathogen responsible for important economic losses to the porcine industry worldwide. The objective of this study was to characterize strains of S suis isolated from dead piglets from farms located in southern Italy (Sardinia) between 2012 and 2014, by determining their genotype profiles, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and presence of associated virulence factors in order to evaluate a potential association between antimicrobial resistance serotypes and virulence factors. A total of 39 S suis isolates were examined for possession of virulence-associated factors using multiplex polymerase chain reaction assays. All isolates were tested for susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Fisher’s exact test was performed in order to study the correlation between antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors epf+/epf-. Genotypes cps2+/ epf+/sly+/mrp+/arcA+, cps2+/epf-/sly+/ mrp+/arcA+, and cps2-/epf-/sly+/mrp+/ arcA+ were identified, representing 18.0%, 74.6%, and 7.4% of the isolates, respectively. A high frequency of resistance was observed for tetracycline (88.9%) and erythromycin (38.9%). No correlation between the virulence factor epf and resistance to multiple antibiotics was found.

Genomic comparisons of Streptococcus suis serotype 9 strains recovered from diseased pigs in Spain and Canada

Streptococcus suis is one of the most important bacterial pathogens in the porcine industry and also a zoonotic agent. Serotype 9 is becoming one of the most prevalent serotypes within the S. suis population in certain European countries. In the present study, serotype 9 strains isolated from a country where infection due to this serotype is endemic (Spain), were compared to those recovered fro...

Slaughterhouse Pigs Are a Major Reservoir of Streptococcus suis Serotype 2 Capable of Causing Human Infection in Southern Vietnam

Streptococcus suis is a pathogen of major economic significance to the swine industry and is increasingly recognized as an emerging zoonotic agent in Asia. In Vietnam, S. suis is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in adult humans. Zoonotic transmission is most frequently associated with serotype 2 strains and occupational exposure to pigs or consumption of infected pork. To gain insight ...

Antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus suis isolated from swine in France and from humans in different countries between 1996 and 2000.

The susceptibility of 135 Streptococcus suis strains isolated from pigs (n = 110) and from humans (n = 25) to 13 antimicrobial agents was studied by microdilution and disc diffusion methods using Mueller-Hinton Agar II (MH) supplemented with either defibrinated sheep blood (MHSB) or horse serum (MHHS). Results were similar for both methods used except for penicillin G whose zone diameters were ...

Distribution of capsular types and production of muramidase-released protein (MRP) and extracellular factor (EF) of Streptococcus suis strains isolated from diseased pigs in seven European countries.

Streptococcus suis strains (n=411), isolated from diseased pigs in seven European countries were serotyped using specific antisera against serotype 1 to 28, and were phenotyped on the basis of their muramidase-released-protein (MRP) and extracellular-factor protein (EF) production. Overall, S. suis serotype 2 appeared to be most prevalent (32%), followed by serotype 9 (20%) and serotype 1 (12%)...

Antimicrobial Resistance Profile and Genotypic Characteristics of Streptococcus suis Capsular Type 2 Isolated from Clinical Carrier Sows and Diseased Pigs in China

Streptococcus suis serotype 2 is an important zoonotic pathogen. Antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypic characterizations of S. suis 2 from carrier sows and diseased pigs remain largely unknown. In this study, 96 swine S. suis type 2, 62 from healthy sows and 34 from diseased pigs, were analyzed. High frequency of tetracycline resistance was observed, followed by sulfonamides. The lo...
